Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) technology accelerates with the publication of the 500 million euro tender for the design and construction of the ERTMS (European Rail Transport Management System), the most advanced system for the supervision and control of train running, in Abruzzo, Sicily, Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio. The tender represents the first step of the technological projects financed by the PNRR, with almost 3 billion euros earmarked for the implementation of ERTMS on over 3,400 km of railway network by 2026, in line with the RFI plan which aims to install the system on all 16,700 km of line.
The European Rail Transport Management System promotes interoperability between railway operators from different countries and improves performance, allowing the passage of a major number of trains and contributing to better punctuality.
Furthermore, through the information exchanged between the on-board and track side subsystem, it is possible to follow any moment train running, providing the driver with all the information necessary with the activation of the emergency braking in the event that not all parameters are met or the train speed exceeds the limits. So far this technology was applied to High Speed trains, but now will also be extended to regional lines bringing a positive effect environmentally thanks to the elimination of the signaling systems that runs along the tracks.
